SEMINAR ON  FEMALE SAFETY IN INDIA : A REALITY CHECK Adv Pranita A Deshpande is a social entrepreneur based in The Netherlands.

She is now mainly involved in  multicultural integration, social and development work through voluntary and non-government organizations. The focal point is in the area of socio-legal field.  Hailing from Maharashtra India Adv Pranita went to The Netherlands with her family in August 2017.  Thereafter Adv Pranita successfully completed her Dutch language Course because she believes that learning a new language increases Networking Skills and opening up to a culture allows you to be more flexible and appreciative of other people’s opinions and actions and enhancing your ability to communicate in today’s globally connected world.

Adv Pranita is also a Trustee of Foundation for Critical Choices for India (FCCI) since February 2018. FCCI was founded in 1980 and registered in the Netherlands in 1981. FCCI is a think tank and focal point for initiating and implementing studies and programs on issues of strategic importance to India in  social, political, economic fields by mobilizing the resources of on resident Indians (NRIs) / persons of Indian origin (PIOs).  FCCI  objectives 1) To identify, define and study critical issues  facing India and to work towards their long term, rational solutions 2) To mobilize moral,  intellectual  and financial resources of Indians abroad for the solution of critical problems facing India 3) To effectively project and promote general interests of  India and Indian Diaspora in the local communities The Foundation for Critical Choices for India, (FCCI) was organized seminar supported by the Indian ladies club on December 2nd in  Valk Hotel Schiphol A4 in The Netherlands  The theme of the seminar was Female Safety in India: a Reality Check. Adv Pranita was one of the Speaker of the Seminar, her Presentation on - “Indian Legislation on protecting rights of females”.   In spite of 72 years of Independence and social reforms, the problem of female safety is quite unprotected in India. Molestation, female child abuse, female foeticide, low rate of enrollment of girls in schools and colleges, poor proportion of working women in private and Government run departments, violence against women statistics, etc. tell a sorry state of female  in India.

Your safety in your hands sounds like a clichéd adage to repeat. Given the number of crimes that are committed against women, it is pertinent that women are aware about the laws that are in place to protect them. Remember knowledge is power. As a parent, wife, daughter, employee and a woman these are rights set in place to protect you and it is important that you are aware about these. Our country is the one where women are given utmost respect. We name India as ‘Bharat Mata’(Mother India) It is evident from our culture that at one side we treat woman as goddess in the form of Lakshmi, Saraswati, Durga, and very next movement all the illegal offences being committed against them like rape, sexual exploitation, kidnapping and most importantly nowadays ‘Female Foeticide’.  Today as per our Constitution we provide equal status to woman on the basis of equality principle. But to achieve or gain this equality Indian woman have to struggle for a long time.  Examples Savitribai Jyotirao Phule was an Indian social reformer, educationalist . She is regarded as the first lady teacher of India.

she played an important role in improving women's rights in India during British rule. Phule, along with her husband founded the first girls' school in Pune
But in rise of 20thcentury Mahatma Gandhi has started national movement for liberalization of woman.  During that time only Rajaram Mohan Roy, Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar many other social workers started a movement for education of woman, prevention of sati system, restrain of polygamy marriages etc.  The result of this was that, Parliament enacted laws for Sati prevention, Restrain of child marriages, Dowry prohibition, Equal rights of woman in property and remarriages of widow etc. Babasaheb Ambedkar, was an Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement and campaigned against social discrimination towards the untouchables (Dalits), while also supporting the rights of women and labour.  He was independent India's first law minister, the principal architect of the Constitution of India, and a founding father of the Republic of India. And later on she explained important Articles of Constitution of India,Sections from Indian Penal Code for female safety and Focus on  Mission and Vision of Ministry of women and Child Development Government of India and later on Laws preventing crimes against women and Laws for female empowerment such as Dowry Prohibition Act,1961,The prohibition of child marriage act 2006(2016),Domestic violence act 2005,Sexual harassment against women at workplace act 2013,Maternity benefit  act 1861(2017),Medical Termination of Pregnancy act
1971(2014) and so on and also explained landmarks judgements that changed the course of women like   Vishaka Vs State of Rajasthan 1997,Indian Young Lawyers Association & Others Vs The State of Kerala 2006 ( Sabarimala Case),Mary Roy Vs State of Kerala AIR 1011, 1986 SCR (1) 371,Laxmi Vs Union Of India & Others 2006.etc  and finally she concluded as  Good Laws,Bad Implementations . India has several laws but they are not implemented. The problem, however, is not the lack of implementation, but the lack of a mechanism by which it can be implemented. Women have insufficient understanding of the law and lack of access to the courts. Hence it is necessary not only to enact a law but to provide the necessary infrastructural tools with which to access the law. The way of doing this is to put a mechanism in place in the law itself.
